Discover the Outer Banks of North Carolina

This team will travel to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a series of climate-vulnerable barrier islands off the coast of our state, to work with the NC Coastal Federation and engage in direct service centered on coastal conservation efforts. Our state’s coastal regions are vulnerable to ecosystem damage from extreme weather events, human development, environmental pollutants, and more.

The Outer Banks are home to rich ecosystems overflowing with wildlife and central to our state’s natural resources. Engage in efforts to preserve this special region while learning about its long history and immersing yourself in its beauty. This experience represents an opportunity to reflect on the intersections of natural resource management and social justice in our own state. Come prepared to engage in hands-on service outdoors, dive deep into coastal conservation efforts, and learn about the history of our state’s Atlantic coast.

Meet your Team Leaders

Our student Team Leaders are chosen in a competitive process to lead our ASB Experiences and have spent extensive time prior to the trip engaging with our ASB Team Leader Development courses. Team Leaders co-create the trip experience alongside professional staff in Student Leadership and Engagement. They learn how to plan all aspects of an ASB Experience, from the trip itinerary and reflection activities to risk management procedures and meal planning.
