Student Organization Advisors

NC State University requires all student organizations to have an advisor. The presence of advisors is an integral part of ensuring the success and well-being of our student body.

Advisor Requirements

  • Must be a faculty or staff member at NC State, or a graduate student on a teaching, research, extension, or services assistantship appointment
  • Complete 3 asynchronous trainings
    • Student Organization Finance Training
    • Responsible Employee Training
    • Clery Act Training
      • Note: Once the student organization submits their registration form, advisors will be sent links for each training. Each training will have varying deadlines.

Additionally, SLE hosts virtual advisor trainings that will be communicated as they are organized. There, we will have an in-depth look into the advisor role, key responsibilities, and have time for questions.

Expectations of Advisors

  • Demonstrate investment in student organization and student leader growth
  • Be a motivator during times in which morale may be low, and during the downslopes of the semester
  • Be a team builder and consistently check in with your organization, providing stability within the advisor/advisee relationship
  • Support in navigating difficult conversations within the executive board and/or on behalf of the organization
  • Serve as a connection and liaison between different departments or campus partners the students may be interested in collaborating with
  • Remind leaders of upcoming deadlines or requirements (registration deadlines, training requirements, tax filing, etc.), as you are made aware of them

Benefits to Advising

  • Make a difference in the community
  • Develop mentoring relationships with students
  • Contribute to a sense of belonging among students
  • An opportunity to give back and foster leadership
  • Gain exposure and learn about new perspectives from students
  • Professional development and personal fulfillment
