Alternative Service Break experiences are designed to be engaging direct service opportunities students participate in during university breaks.

Fall Break 2025 Experience
Rutherfordton, NC – Rutherford Housing Partnership

This team will travel to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to work with the Rutherford Housing Partnership, a 25-year-old 501(c)3 non-profit organization designed to address urgent home repairs affecting health and safety in Rutherford County communities. While being immersed in the culture of rural Appalachia, you will gain a better understanding of how housing insecurity and economic disparity affects rural communities here in North Carolina, and the nature of a community-centered response.

Winter Break 2025 Experiences
Chile – Adventure Volunteer
ASB Chile is a sustainability-driven cultural immersion experience where students join Mapuche Indigenous families in Southern Chile during the vibrant and demanding harvest season. Through collaboration with our community partner, Adventure Volunteer, participants will work with community members to harvest crops, tend gardens, and care for farmland in support of the region’s agricultural economy.
This experience offers opportunities for cultural exchange and personal growth, including workshops, shared meals, exploration of Villarica National Park, and an ascent of the iconic Villarica Volcano.
ASB Chile offers the chance to work alongside the Mapuche community, learn from their traditions, and witness the deep connection between culture, land, and sustainability.

Dominican Republic – Service for Peace

Servicio Para la Paz (SPP) facilitates community driven development in communities in the Republica Dominicana through shared experiences with Dominican and USA university student volunteers. Established in the Dominican Republic in 2005, Servicio Para la Paz has worked towards promoting the development of more than 14 communities with infrastructure projects and community empowerment through community councils. These internal projects have included the construction of a classroom, river flood protection wall, and a water tank for clean water access. Servicio Para la Paz also collaborates with institutions that support the same programmatic areas we work with.

Spring Break 2026 Experiences
Costa Rica – People First Tourism

Volunteers on ASB Costa Rica will work with People First Tourism. This trip focuses on disrupting an industry that often takes advantage of the people and places that make it profitable in the first place.
Participants will engage in experiences centered on environmental ecotourism, stay in community centers, and partner with the community to complete projects meant to enhance local resources. Participants will embark on an excursion to Earth University which has an innovative educational approach to prepare young people from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and other regions to contribute to the sustainable development of their home communities while constructing a prosperous and just global society.

Maryland – Individuals with varying Abilities

Travel through various parts of Maryland and Washington DC serving with a variety of partners including the Arc and Bello Marche.
The Arc of DC promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively supports their full participation in the community. We envision a world where everyone is respected for their capabilities, can freely exercise their rights, and has fully inclusive opportunities to live their lives and contribute to the betterment of society.
Bello Machre offers people with developmental disabilities the services, opportunities, and support they need to live full, independent, rich lives. For over 50 years, we’ve provided residential services, community-based services, and more.

Orlando – Give Kids the World

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Give Kids the World Village. Our passionate volunteers contribute their time and talent helping to create priceless memories for critically ill children and their families during magical weeklong wish vacations in our whimsical, storybook Village.
Serving in a variety of unique roles, volunteers enjoy a truly rewarding experience helping to deliver happiness and inspire hope for our precious families. From serving “Ice Cream For Breakfast” in Henri’s Starlite Scoops and operating our accessible rides, to assisting with wish family check-in, every task undertaken by our wonderful volunteers is impactful and meaningful – bringing us one step closer to transforming lives.

Peru – Fuller Center for Housing

Volunteers will have the opportunity to travel to a community in Peru, where housing insecurity remains a critical issue. In partnership with the Fuller Center for Housing, you’ll contribute to efforts supporting the construction of safe, affordable homes.
Participants will stay near the work site and take part in a variety of construction projects based on the community’s most immediate needs. In addition to hands-on work, you’ll engage with local residents, learn about Peruvian culture, and reflect on the connections between housing and social justice.

Puerto Rico – Community Collaborations International

Community Collaborations International has tackled environmental restoration, housing resiliency, childhood education, and community-supported agriculture projects in Puerto Rico. They’ve stood strong through several hurricanes, earthquakes, school closings, covid shutdowns, and economic challenges, continuing to make significant positive impact on the wellbeing of local communities, families, and on our volunteers.

Rwanda – College of Engineering

The Rwanda spring break experience is a transformative opportunity which focuses above all else on cultural exchange and STEM focused education in community schools. Students will have the opportunity to visit the University of Rwanda, the Women’s Center, and the Genocide Memorial. Participants stay at the real “Hotel Rwanda” and also go on a safari and dive into the history and culture of this amazing country.

Panama – Public Health Brigades

Participants will work hand-in-hand with local contractors to build and maintain water and sanitation infrastructure such as storage systems, showers, and more!
Public Health Brigades partners with communities to improve public health infrastructure to contribute to increased quality of life, economic stimulation, and promote environmental conservation practices.
We will also present educational workshops about Water, Sanitation, and Health to promote the sustainability and longevity of infrastructure projects.

Washington DC – Cycle of Poverty

This team will travel to Washington DC to engage in a variety of direct service and educational opportunities to better understand the cycle of poverty in an urban setting. Service will primarily focus on food security and homelessness alleviation.

May Break 2026 Experience
Thailand – Globe Aware

This team will travel to the hill-tribe communities of northern Thailand, in the foothills northeast of Chiang Mai, near the border region with Myanmar. In partnership with Globe Aware, participants will work with traditional hill-tribe groups (including the Lahu, Akha, and Karen communities) across various rural villages.
Many children in these communities lack access to stable education and are at risk of exploitation; the trip’s mission is to support these vulnerable youth by offering them schooling, safe housing, food, healthcare, and social support – helping provide them a path out of poverty and vulnerability. Participants assist with building and repairing infrastructure (like chicken coops, fish ponds, vegetable gardens), tending farms, helping care for animals, working in kitchens, repairing accommodations, and supporting educational efforts (including basic English teaching and life-skills training).
