Student Organization Advisors

NC State University requires all student organizations to have an advisor. The presence of advisors is an integral part of ensuring the success and well-being of our student body.  

To be an advisor, you must be a faculty or staff member at NC State, or a graduate student on a teaching, research, extension, or services assistantship appointment.

Expectations of Advisors 

  • Serve as a reflective agent when talking with your students about their strengths, weaknesses, success and failures. Provide concrete examples when giving any type of feedback or constructive criticism.
  • Encourage wellness and the values of being civically engaged.
  • Be a motivator during times in which morale may be low and during the downslopes of the semester.
  • Serve as a Role Model through actions and encouragement.
  • Is a team builder and is consistently checking in with your organization, providing stability within the advisor/advisee relationship.
  • Mediate uncomfortable conversations between members. 
  • Serve as a connection and potential liaison between different departments or campus partners the students may be interested in collaborating with. 
  • Serving as an educator in some capacity by helping your student org list outcomes they might like to see within the different layers of work they do.
